Triathlon & Duathlon

Get ready for the ultimate reverse triathlon in beautiful Pasadena! Run/Bike/Swim OR participate in the duathlon and Run/Bike/Run.

5k Run, 15k Bike, and 150 Meter Swim

Triathlon ‘Reverse’

A reverse triathlon is the best way to get into the sport. Athletes start on Seco Blvd. (south side of the Rose Bowl) and run (1) loop around the Rose Bowl. There is a slight incline for the first part of the run, and then a slight downhill as runners return to the transition area to get on their bike. The bike is (3) loops around the Rose Bowl. There’s uphills, downhills and best of all, no cars! After the bike portion, athletes will run down to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center, jump in, and swim (3) laps in the pool.

This race is perfect for new triathletes and seasoned competitors.

Make sure to check out the TRIATHLON CLINICS hosted by the Pasadena Triathlon Club to help you prepare for race day and get all your questions answered.

5k Run, 15k Bike, 5k Run

Duathlon

Let’s face it, the duathlon is actually harder than the triathlon with two 5k runs hugging a 15k bike ride. A duathlon cuts out the swim and is a favorite among people looking to do something different, without getting their hair wet. Athletes start on Seco Blvd. (south side of the Rose Bowl) and run (1) loop around the Rose Bowl. There is a slight incline for the first part of the run, and then a slight downhill as runners return to the transition area to get on their bike. The bike portion consists of (3) loops around the Rose Bowl. Athletes then return to the transition area, drop of their bike, and head out for one more running loop around the Rose Bowl.

Prepare

Equipment to Bring

Bike Equipment
Every athlete needs to bring their own bike. Most types of bikes are allowed, including 10 speed, mountain bikes, time trial bikes. All bikes need to have a hand brakes and a freewheel (no fixies allowed). More rules can be found HERE.

Swim Equipment
All you need for the swim is a swimsuit, which you can wear under your running gear (or just race in it). After leaving your bike at transition, you will run (with your shoes) down to the pool. You will drop your shoes outside of the pool deck (there is a sign) and then walk quickly to the pool. From there, you’ll jump in and swim three 3 laps. At the end of each lap, you’ll duck under the lane line and swim to the other side. Don’t worry – there are signs and volunteers to guide you along the way.

Run Equipment
All you need for the run is some running shoes and a good attitude! Note, there is one water station on the run course.

Prepare

What is a Transition Area?

The transition area is basically your home base. It’s a large fenced in area where you will place all your race equipment. In the early morning before the race begins, you will enter the transition area, look for your specific age group sign, and place your bike on the rack. We recommend all athletes come to an INTRO TO TRIATHLON CLINIC to get all your questions answered. These clinics are free and hosted by the experts at the Pasadena Triathlon Club.

Angel 5k
benefiting Angel City Sports

The course actually measures to a 5.3k which is just a smidgen over 3 miles. It’s mostly downhill though, so it doesn’t feel longer than a typical 5k. You can complete the 5k by walking, jogging, running, or wheeling in your wheelchair.

For each 5k entry $5 will be donated to Angel City Sports. Every 5k participant will receive a unique Angel 5k T-Shirt and Finisher Medal. Stay after and enjoy the post-race Expo!

Registration Policies:

Generic Events does not authorize refunds at any time, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Transfer Policy – You may complete a person-to-person transfer or transfer to another event (must be open for registration) up to two weeks prior to the event. We do not charge for this, but there is an Active.com processing fee for all transfer transactions.

• Participants can only complete a transfer if the registrant is 18 years or older.

No Show Policy – If you are unable to attend the event and/or do not show up for the event, your entry spot and race items will be released and sold to event day registrants. Included registration items such as medals, t-shirts, and hats will not be mailed to participants who do not participate in the event they signed up for. Please review the transfer policy above if you are interested in transferring your registration to a different event or person.

Race Conduct – We will not tolerate any inappropriate behavior to any of our volunteers or staff. If you have a complaint please direct these to Brennan Lindner at info@genericevents.com. Failure to follow this guideline will result in disqualification from the event and possibly being banned from future events. Seriously. We’re all out here for some fun, so let’s have some!

Natural Disaster Policy – If an Act of God/Terrorism/Community Disaster occurs, what happens?
1. We make decisions based on safety first.
2. The municipality will also make a decision.
3. Race courses and race date will be altered as seen fit by race management and the City of Pasadena.
4. Athletes in a postponed race will be transferred to the rescheduled date at no charge.
5. Generic Events cannot accept the risk of a disaster for everyone. Each athlete needs to accept the risk of his or her entry fee. There will be NO REFUNDS. The money you paid is spent developing that race.

Why? We do not save any money if the race is postponed or you choose not run. We have paid for every supply and service needed for that race. We pay for all race supplies or services associated with that race, regardless of the outcome. These include paying for permits, our staff, offices, finisher medal and shirt fees, administration costs all year. It’s not ideal, and nobody likes wasting money, but we unfortunately cannot predict what will happen on race day.

Who can I contact?

For any inquiries, please reach out to our support team via the form on our Contact Page. We are here to help!

Parents FAQs

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR/BRING?

Less is more in triathlon! The less stuff to change in and out of the better. It is recommended that children wear a bathing suit under their run/bike shorts and shirt (there are no changing rooms!). They will likely wear the same sneakers for the run, bike, and the transition to the pool. They MUST have a helmet for the bike ride. No exceptions! You’ll also want a towel and a change of clothes for post-tri. We will have a water table in the transition area available at all times. There will be snacks and water at the finish festival.

WHAT TIME DOES IT START/ARE THERE WAVES?

All children should be set up in the kids transition and ready for a pre-race talk from the Race Director at 10:15am. The children will be separated into groups of about 25 kids based on their age on 12/31 as per USAT rules. Waves are as follows: 9-10 years, 7-8 years, 5-6 years. Waves will start oldest to youngest with the first group starting at 10:45am and approximately 10-15 minutes between waves. Timing of the wave starts is intended to help keep the children safe by easing congestion on the course and is at the discretion of the kids race coordinator.

CAN PARENTS BE ON THE COURSE WITH THE KIDS?

Parents are welcome to come and support their young triathletes from the sidelines but may NOT be on the course.

We have created a course that will keep the kids “close to home” so there are plenty of opportunities for photos and to help out your child if they need it. There will be volunteers and signage, as well as lead runners, lead cyclists, and lifeguards guiding the children and helping them if they need it.

Parents of 5-6 year olds may run alongside very young triathlete in wave 3 only, but please limit this to one adult per child. (please run/walk only, no adults on bikes please). You may also be on deck when your child is in the pool.

IS IT TIMED/ARE THEIR AWARDS?

Children will receive a timing chip but this is just for their personal interest only – there are no awards at this level – your child does not need to wear the timing chip to participate (but they will need to turn it back in to the race so please bring it with you)

WHERE IS THE TRANSITION AREA?

The kids transition area, which is located near the 5k finish line (look for the green KIDS ZONE flags), will open at 7:00am so bikes/gear may be dropped off beginning then. Please ensure bikes are properly marked with race stickers from the packet you will receive at check in. You will need your child’s bib to enter transition and to remove bikes at the end of the event.

All children should be set up in the kids transition and ready for a pre-race talk from the Race Director at 10:15am. To avoid overcrowding, only one adult per child is allowed in the transition area at any time. There will be volunteers to help with set up.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE LOOK LIKE?

THE RUN COURSE: Kids will run out and back along a closed road, the course is about 1K on road and a dirt trail behind Kidspace museum. Wave 3’s course is slightly shorter.

THE BIKE COURSE: From transition, young athletes will head onto a coned lane to Seco that will be closed off to traffic. The bike course is about 3/4 of a mile and includes a loop around the median. Parents may watch from the sidewalk (content removed). Adults are asked to stay off the course for the safety of the children. NO CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT A HELMET.

After the bike loop, cyclists will head back to transition to prepare for the pool swim.

THE SWIM COURSE: From the transition area, athletes will run a short distance on the grass to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center (shoes are recommended until they reach the deck). They will swim out and back (25m each way). When they exit the pool they are finished and will receive a medal!

Younger children will swim across the pool one time, 25m. Yes, floaties are ok for this group only.

Swim caps are not necessary, but those with long hair should tie it back

Is the course accessible for children with disabilities?

We encourage all children 5-10 with basic run, bike, and swim experience to participate in our Jr Triathlon. We proudly partner with Angel City Sports and are happy to make special accommodations for children with disabilities who wish to complete the Jr Tri. Portions of the run and all of the bike course are on road and are therefore wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your child’s specific needs.

Please email info@genericevents.com if you have any questions.

Rules

What you can and cannot do – provided by USA Triathlon (yes these are the rules only for the triathlon).

1. Most commonly violated rules
2. Rules

Race Etiquette:

Observe all race rules at all times.
Don’t use a radio headset during the bike or run.
Don’t place your bike and equipment on top of someone else’s in the transition area. Respect the athlete’s space and equipment.
If you are a slower rider stay on the right side except when passing. Keep a straight line when riding. Only discard your water bottles and trash at an aid station. If you have to discard a bottle, make sure your throw it away from the other athletes.
There is no littering on the race course.
If you have mechanical problems, pull off the course on the right. Always let the rider ahead know you are passing on the left. And above all obey all safety rules on the course.
Keep your pets at home if you are racing. Do you really need another distraction?
The swim is always tough, but I’ve seen athletes actually push and crowd others away from their start positions. Don’t grab, push or pull others during the swim. It’s not combat swimming!
During the run keep to the right except to pass. When you do pass someone or see them at the turnaround offer a word of encouragement.
Be careful at the aid stations. This is usually the area where most of the items like gel packs and bottles are dropped and the pavement can be extremely slick. There is plenty to drink for everyone. Give each other room to drink and go.

After the Race:

When you cross the finish line, don’t be dramatic. You did a good job by finishing, now remove your chip or number, get a drink and move away from the finish chute without a lot of drama!
Treat the finish line workers with respect. Your day is over they still have a lot to do.
After you recover a bit, cheer on the other competitors and talk with the athletes. Pat all the youth on the back and offer words of encouragement when they finish!
If you stick around for the awards then wait until all the awards are given out. I know it is tough at times but support the other competitors till the end.
Good or bad race – “Be your own HERO!” after the race. Smile, hold your head high and take pride inside. You stepped up to the start line and you did it, you put yourself in the heat of competition and you finished even if the only person you were competing with was yourself!
Check out www.usatriathlon.org for more info

Relay Team Rules:

All rules applying to individual competitors apply to relay competitors except where such rules conflict with specific relay rules.

Relay teams must be composed of three athletes – one swimmer, one cyclist and one runner. Team members can be either the same gender or any combination of male/female. The minimum age of a participant is 16 years old.
The relay team ‘chip transfer’ area must be within the marked Relay Team Area in the transition area. There will be a Relay Team Referee overseeing the ‘chip transfer’ of each team member. If a ‘chip transfer’ happens outside of the Relay Team Area, the team will not be included in the official results.
Any relay team interfering with an individual competitor or any way placing an individual competitor at a competitive disadvantage will be disqualified.
RUN

Relay runners will start in the relay team wave (see schedule above).
BIKE

All relay bikes must be placed in the designated bike racks in the Transition Area. Team bikes must not be removed from the designated bike rack until AFTER the timing chip has been passed onto the team cyclist.
After receiving the timing chip the cyclist must WALK their bikes through the transition area to the MOUNT LINE. At this time cyclists may mount their bike and depart on the 15k bike.
Upon completion of the 15k bike and arrival at the Transition Area, cyclists must dismount at the DISMOUNT LINE and WALK their bike back to the designated bike rack. Once the cyclist has entered the marked Team Relay Area, they may hand off the timing chip to the swimmer. Once the swimmer has attached the timing chip, he/she may depart to the swim course. Cyclists must re-rack their bike on the designated bike rack.
RUN

Relay swimmers must turn in their timing chip at the designated timing table behind the finish line immediate after crossing the finish line. Any team failing to turn in its timing chip will not be considered an official finisher
